West End Civic Association

Dear Fellow Westenders,

Since our last meeting in November of 2017, the Board of the West End Civic Association has been very busy this holiday season.  A few days before Christmas, we gave our annual donation to a needy family in the west end.  In years past, the annual donation has been $250.00, because our coffers are tight, the Board made a decision to reduce the amount to $150.00.  We will be concentrating on fund raising in 2018, to deposit more funds in the account so we can continue to do good work for our residents.  We also continued the tradition of awarding a prize to the best decorated Christmas house in the west end.  My family and I dropped off a Poinsettia (generously donated by fellow west ender John Powers of Con-Kel Landscaping) to the MACALUSO family at 180 Crocus Avenue.  They always do a wonderful display and this year they were rewarded for their valiant efforts.

Myself and Vice-President Kevin Flood attended the Village Board meeting on December 19th where the topic of conversation was the new arena being built at Belmont Park.  We both had an opportunity to speak and we voraciously voiced our concerns of noise, parking, safety and all issues relating to our properties close proximity to the venue.  The Board assured us that they are working vigorously to protect our way of life, and we promised any support that we can give when called upon.  I find it outrageous that such a massive project would be built without any input from the surrounding communities and especially direct neighbors of the site.  As of this writing, no one from the project has called me regarding our stance and/or issues on the site.

We are looking forward to 2018, where hopefully we can get some answers on the Belmont project and get a chance to discuss concerns with the project engineers in the development of the arena.  Please attend any and all meetings you are able to, so that you can stay informed.  Our first meeting of 2018 is scheduled for February 1st at the Atlantic Avenue Firehouse; we have been informed that construction is slated to begin on the firehouse in 2018, so please check your email for all meeting dates, times and/or changes.
